Ron Weasley CostumePoor Ron Weasley! He was the sixth of six sons, older only than the sister he believed his mother wished he was. Then he met Harry Potter and he thought he would forever be in Harry’s shadow.

It wasn’t until Ron joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team that he finally gained confidence in himself and started to come into his own. In addition to being a Quidditch player, the influence of both Harry and Hermione Granger wasout also good for Ron in building his confidence in the long run, even if the trio didn’t always get along.

You have several options if you want to dress in a Ron Weasley costume. You can go with his Hogwarts school uniform, which can include a Gryffindor robe, sweater, tie, and scarf.

If you prefer Ron’s look as a Quidditch player then you can wear the Quidditch robe, helmet, and goggles, as well as a broom and quaffle. Finally, you can dress in casual clothes which Ron often wore.

There are also a variety of accessories that you can add to make your costume more authentic, such as his wand, the Deluminator, or Scabbers. I have also included what you need to replicate Ron’s ginger red hair and freckles.

Mandatory Accessories

Wig

As we all know, Ron is a ginger, just like the rest of the Weasley clan. His hair changed lengths many times throughout the films so you have a lot of leeway with how long you want your hair to be.

When you click on the link below you will see orange-haired wigs, some of which look a bit wild or spiky. Any of them will work because you can tame the styles however you want instead of keeping the wigs the way they arrive.

Orange Hair Spray

Not into wearing wigs? Or, is your hair the right length and cut for Ron’s hair, just not the right color? Then I have good news for you! A wig is not your only option.

You can quickly and easily change the color of your hair by spraying it with orange-colored hairspray. Colored hair spray is temporary and will wash out when you are ready to go back to your natural color.

Freckles

Orange hair isn’t the only physical trait that Ron has. His freckles are another of his identifying features, even if actor Rupert Grint who played Ron in the movies didn’t have them. I’m including freckles as a mandatory accessory because the book version of Ron did have them.

You can easily add freckles to your face by using an eyeliner pencil. Adding freckles to your face with an eyeliner pencil will quickly dull the tip so be sure to keep it sharpened as you go.

You might find it easier to add freckles if you warm up the pencil tip before applying the makeup to your face. You can warm it up by gently exhaling warm air from your mouth over the tip.

Wand

Like so many of Ron’s belongings, his wand was a hand-me-down from one of his older brothers. It worked okay for him until he broke it when he and Harry crashed into the Whomping Willow while driving his father’s flying Ford Anglia.

Ron tried to repair his wand with Spellotape but it didn’t really help. If you want to add a bit of authenticity to your wand then you can wrap tape around it. Just don’t try to use the Slugulus Eructo (slug-vomiting) charm with it!

Gryffindor School Uniform

Robe

As a member of Gryffindor House Ron wore a Gryffindor robe while attending class at Hogwarts. There are many versions of the Gryffindor robe but the one thing they all have in common is that they are all black with burgundy trim.

Some robes are very basic, while others are much more detailed. Any of them will work fine, so it’s up to you to decide how you want to dress your version of Ron. Gryffindor robes come in both child and adult sizes, so just about anyone in your family has the opportunity to dress up in a Ron outfit.

Cosplay Robe

You have one more option when it comes to choosing a robe. There are also cosplay versions of the Gryffindor house robe available.

Cosplay outfits are usually better quality than mass-produced costumes. They are made from more durable materials and often include far more detail than non-Cosplay outfits. Most Cosplay robes are made for adults but I did see at least one on Etsy for kids and several on Amazon.

Grey Sweater

A sweater is part of Ron’s school uniform. The Gryffindor house sweater is dark grey with burgundy trim.

The sweater that you see here is the official Gryffindor sweater. Sadly, it is almost impossible to find these days. I’ve included a link to it on Amazon but doubt you will find it there.

However, there are several sellers on Etsy who make their own versions of this sweater. This means you have a very good chance of finding one you like there.

White Shirt

Another part of every Hogwarts student’s school uniform is a white shirt. Sure, you rarely see the shirts underneath the school robes but they are there, so you will want to include one, especially if you want to be as accurate as possible with your outfit.

One thing that I do not know is if the shirts have long or short sleeves so you can decide what type of shirt will work best for your costume. There are a lot of shirts to choose from so go with the one that you like the most.

Cufflinks

You can add a touch of class, or humor, to your outfit with one of the many Harry Potter cufflinks that are available. Most are serious, such as the ones for each of the four Houses, but some are silly, like the ones made with Harry Potter LEGO® characters. Some even come with matching tie clips.

Grey Pants

The last thing you need for your costume is a pair of grey pants. I have found that Dockers style pants have just the right mixture of a casual and professional look to them.

School Hat

There are two types of hats that students of Hogwarts can wear as they go about their days. The first type of hat is the one you see here, a black hat that comes to a point on top.

This is the hat that conforms with each student’s required uniform. However, based on what we saw in the movies, the hat is required to have but not necessarily to wear. Students seemed to have the option to choose whether or not they wanted to wear it.

Beanie

The other style of hat that Hogwarts students can wear is the beanie hat. This hat is perfect during the winter months because it will keep your ears warm if you choose to pull the hat down to cover your ears.

The beanie is knitted from the colors of Gryffindor House. Some styles even include the house’s crest on it, just above the forehead. It’s nice to know that Hogwarts allows students the option to choose their hats, especially given how cold it gets in the wintertime there.

Tie

Some Gryffindor robes come with a matching tie, but not all. Find out if the robe you want comes with a tie or not, and if it doesn’t then you can buy one separately.

All Gryffindor ties are a combination of maroon and gold, though the amount of redness varies from one tie maker to another. Some ties also have the Gryffindor house crest on them.

If you are also going to buy a hat and/or scarf then I recommend making sure that the red for all of them match.

Tie Clip

There are several different tie clips, also called tie bars, that you can use to keep your House tie in place. Designs include the Hogwarts school crest, Platform 9 3/4, and the Deathly Hallows symbol.

Scarf

Another item that Hogwarts students are allowed to wear is a scarf. As you saw above with the beanie, scarves match the colors of a student’s house and the Gryffindor scarf is no exception.

There are scarves that will match the beanie hats, but you need to be careful. Some of the colors match while others clash. Take time to find a beanie and scarf that will go well together if you want to wear both with your costume.

If you live in a colder climate and want to dress up in a Harry Potter costume then it would make sense if you also wore a scarf with your outfit. Including a scarf will allow you to bundle up and keep your neck and head warm.

Socks

There are several different types of Gryffindor socks, including knee-high and ankle socks. Some socks are officially licensed, while many others are lovingly designed by fans.

Quidditch Uniform

Quidditch Robe

Ron joined the Gryffindor Quidditch team during his fifth year at Hogwarts as a Keeper. He was inconsistent in the beginning but gained confidence as he improved as a player. The highlight for Ron was when his efforts resulted in a Gryffindor win during his sixth year.

If you click on the left image you will be taken to Amazon where there are Quidditch robes for kids. Apparently, there aren’t any official Quidditch outfits for adults. The good news is that if you click the right image you will be taken to Etsy where you can buy a custom-made Quidditch robe, which includes sizes for both kids and adults.

Quidditch Varsity Jacket

You have the option of wearing a varsity team jacket. There are several styles available, although they can be hard to find.

Quidditch Sweater

You might recall that Quidditch players in the Harry Potter movies sometimes wore sweaters that matched their Houses. They are made from a heavy knit yarn and have accenting colors for each House. The Gryffindor sweater is red with yellow.

Quidditch Jersey

There is also a jersey shirt that is lightweight if you don’t want the warmth of the sweater. There are several official styles and many unofficial ones.

Quidditch Socks

Would you believe that there are Gryffindor Quidditch socks? Yes, there are! The officially licensed socks are red and yellow, have a cape on the back of the legs, and the number 07, which was Harry Potter’s team number.

There is also a pair of ankle socks that you can wear with your Quidditch outfit if you don’t want socks that have a cape.

Quidditch Helmet

There are not too many items that a Quidditch player is required to wear but the most important item is arguably the helmet. Quidditch helmets resemble old-fashioned boxing helmets, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where the design inspiration came from.

Given the fact that Quidditch players are flying on brooms high above the ground, protecting their heads from falls is a must. At first glance, Quidditch helmets don’t look very protective but I am sure that they have been magically enhanced so that students who fall don’t need to worry about their heads. Their arms, on the other hand, now that’s a different matter altogether…

Quidditch Goggles

An item that seems to be optional, yet very helpful, is goggles. Imagine what it must be like flying around at high speeds. Your eyes would surely take a beating even in the best weather. Days when it rains would be torturous for the players.

Goggles are the perfect item to help Quidditch players fly without wind, rain, or debris irritating their eyes. I love how the goggles have a bit of a steampunk feel to them, and that they have a golden snitch on the sides. Goggles are a nice touch if you wear a Quidditch costume.

Accessory Kit

There is an officially licensed accessory kit that includes goggles, gloves, arm guards, and knee and shin guards. They are brown and look like they are made from leather (they aren’t really) and add a nice touch to any Quidditch uniform. There’s just one thing – this set only comes in child size.

Broom

Having a decent broom is a must for every Quidditch player. The quality of a person’s broom will directly impact how well the team does as a whole since speed and accuracy play a big part in this game.

When Ron was made a Prefect his parents said they would buy him a gift. Ron asked for a broom that he could use when playing Quidditch, and because he knew they couldn’t afford a really nice broom Ron humbly asked for a Cleansweep Eleven.

Although his broom couldn’t keep up with Harry Potter’s Firebolt, Ron’s Cleansweep Eleven was his pride and joy! There is no replica of the Cleansweep Eleven but if asked you can always tell people that this is your broom’s model.

Golden Snitch

The Golden Snitch is a super-fast flying object that needs to be caught before any game can end. Not only are they fast, but they are also small and incredibly difficult to see, let alone catch.

What would Quidditch be without the Golden Snitch? Boring, very, very boring!

Quaffle

Ron’s job as a Keeper on the Gryffindor Quidditch team was to keep the other team from scoring with the Quaffle. Therefore, it would be a nice touch if you carry around a Quaffle with your Quidditch costume.

There is an officially licensed Quaffle, but it often goes out of stock which is why I have included links to both Amazon and eBay to help you find one.

Bludger Bat and Ball

Beaters use Bludger bats to hit a small ball at their opponents to keep them from scoring. Getting hit by a Bludger or ball is one of the more dangerous aspects of Quidditch.

Weasley Is Our King Button

In the book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Draco Malfoy tried to psych out Ron by singing a song called “Weasley is our King” that had lyrics about what an awful Keeper he was. Draco’s plan worked and Ron felt completely demoralized after hearing the Slytherins sing Draco’s song as loudly as they could.

However, by the end of the story, Draco’s plan ultimately backfired because Ron won the only game that really matter – the Quidditch Cup. After Ron’s spectacular win all the Gryffindors, Ravenclaws, and Hufflepuffs turned the song into a positive one about how amazing Ron was. Adding a “Weasley is our King” button to your uniform is a fun addition to your outfit.

Ron Weasley’s Casual Clothes

Jacket

We don’t see Ron wearing casual clothes much in the earlier movies but we see him in them a lot in the final two. Of course, the fact that he, Harry, and Hermione were on the run for the bulk of those two movies is the main reason for this.

When Ron went casual he really went casual. His jacket of choice was a comfortable-looking plaid jacket. I have searched Amazon and found jackets that closely resemble the one that we saw Ron wear.

Sweater

It seems to me that Ron was somewhat often seen in casual sweaters. The casual sweaters Ron wore most were burgundy in color.

Personally, I think he fancied burgundy because it looked good with the color of his hair. Interestingly, this was also the color his mom usually chose when she made her famous monogram sweaters for him each year.

Shirt

Sweaters and jackets weren’t the only casual clothes worn by Ron. He also wore a variety of comfy-looking shirts, and most of them had some variation of stripes on them.

Of course, if you decide to dress up in a casual version of Ron you are not limited to striped shirts. Just make sure that the shirt you choose doesn’t look trendy or expensive because none of Ron’s clothes would fit either of those descriptions.

Pants

All that’s left now is pants. Ron’s casual pants looked similar to Dockers, which will make picking the right pair of pants for you a fairly easy task.

As for the color of the pants, that is up to you. Just make sure your pants match your shirt, sweater, and/or jacket. And since Dockers come in a lot of different colors you should have no problem at all making sure your pants match the rest of your outfit.

Gryffindor Pin

Add a Gryffindor House pin to your Ron Weasley costume for a bit of fun. There are at least a handful of official pins that I know of, but there are many fan-made pins that are also available.

Prefect Pin

Those of you who have read the books know that Ron was made a Prefect in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This was as much a shock to Ron as it was to Harry and Hermione.

For those of you who don’t know, a Prefect is the name given to students who have been selected by the Headmaster to take on additional responsibilities. There is one boy and one girl Prefect at the beginning of their fifth year designated as Prefects for each house. These students continue as Prefects in their sixth and seventh years.

Hogwarts Student ID Badge

I found a seller who makes Hogwarts student ID badges. Each badge includes a student’s details, such as House, name, gender, wizarding blood status, and wand type.

There are pre-made badges for many of the main characters that have pictures of the actors who portrayed each character. Or, you can customize a badge with a picture of yourself and any name you want.

Mrs. Weasley’s ‘R’ Sweater

Christmas was a wonderful time for the students of Hogwarts, filled with magical decorations and gifts from loved ones. The students who spent the holiday at Hogwarts looked forward to seeing a pile of presents, with the possible exception of Ron Weasley.

As you know, every Christmas Ron got a magically knit sweater from his mum that had a large R on it. He knew that he would be expected to wear the sweater, despite the great embarrassment that it caused him.

Ron may have hated Mrs. Weasley’s sweaters but if you love them you can add this to your costume. Some of these sweaters are handmade on Etsy and you have the option of choosing any letter for your sweater, not just ‘R’.

Chudley Cannons Shirt

Ron grew up in a magical home and Ron’s favorite professional Quidditch team was the Chudley Cannons so it would not be out of character if you decide to wear a Chudley Cannons shirt with your casual costume.

The shirt you see here comes in a variety of colors. I have no idea what the “official” colors are for the Chudley Cannons so you can go with whatever color you like best.

“My Sweatheart” Necklace

Lavender Brown was Ron’s first girlfriend and she shocked Ron by giving him a necklace for Christmas that said, “My Sweetheart.” There is no “My Sweetheart” necklace but there are plenty of other necklaces that Ron would be equally mortified to wear that you can choose from.

Okay, admit it… You sniggered inside each time Lavender called Ron, “Won Won.” I know I did!

Horcrux Locket

In the last book and the last two movies we learned about Horcruxes and how Lord Voldemort created them in his attempt to become immortal. The trio was able to find the locket that once belonged to Salazar Slytherin but had been turned into a Horcrux and struggled to find a way to destroy it.

Until it could be destroyed Ron, Harry, and Hermione took turns wearing the locket. The Horcrux had a nasty way of getting into the mind of whoever wore it, causing that person to easily and quickly rise to anger. Of the three, the Horcrux affected Ron the worst, making everything seem even worse than it was.

Chocolate Frog

Ron and Harry met just before getting on the Hogwarts Express train to Hogwarts and they spent the entire train ride getting to know each other. When the Trolley witch showed up with all kinds of delicious sweets, Harry bought one of everything and shared them with Ron.

Ron explained Chocolate Frogs and their collectible wizard trading cards to Harry, then asked if he could have one. Harry, happy to finally have someone to share his things with, let Ron eat as many as he wanted. Throughout the series Ron seemed to have a love of these yummy treats and he ate them any time he came across them.

You might want to hide a chocolate frog or two in your robes somewhere. Don’t forget to include one of the wizard cards that comes with them!

Deluminator

Do you remember the very first scene from the very first movie where Dumbledore arrived at #4 Privet Drive? He took out an object that he used to suck up all the light from the lamps in the neighborhood so that he could deliver Baby Harry to the Dursleys doorstep in darkness.

The item that Dumbledore used was of his own creation and he called it a Deluminator. It was also sometimes called a Put-Outer because it put out lights, though it also returned the lights to their original locations as well.

Dumbledore bequeathed his Deluminator to Ron after his passing. Ron didn’t know what he was supposed to do with it until shortly after he left Ron and Hermione in anger. Ron could not have returned to them had it not been for the Deluminator showing him the way back to his friends, something Dumbledore knew Ron would want to do.

Cauldron and Jelly Slugs

One of the more memorable scenes in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was when Ron started regurgitating slugs. His wand had been broken after he and Harry crashed his father’s Ford Anglia into the Whomping Willow and the damage caused it to be very unreliable.

Ron got angry at Draco for calling Hermione a Mudblood and tried to cast the ‘Slugulus Eructo’ charm on him. The spell was meant to cause Draco to vomit slugs but the spell backfired on Ron and he spent the next few hours expelling them himself.

You can recreate this scene, though with much tastier slugs than the ones Ron experienced, with a small cauldron and a pack of Jelly Slugs. If you plan on carrying the cauldron with you then you might want to get one with a handle.

Scabbers

The first time Harry met Ron he was also introduced to Ron’s pet rat, named Scabbers. Scabbers, who was old and lazy, was Ron’s hand-me-down pet.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Ron was mortified to find out that Scabbers wasn’t a rat at all. Instead, he turned out to be Peter Pettigrew, an unregistered Animagus (someone who could transform into an animal). I think we all shared Ron’s revulsion at this revelation.

Pigwidgeon

Sirius Black felt partly responsible for the loss of Ron’s pet rat so he sent a small owl to Ron as a replacement. His sister Ginny named the owl Pigwidgeon because she thought the name was “cute” and the owl refused to be called by any other name. The best Ron was able to do was shorten it to Pig.

Pigwidgeon was a scops owl which is a small breed of owl, who was every bit as adorable as his name! This is an item that goes in and out of stock at Amazon so it might not be available when you click on the link. On the other hand, there are several handmade versions of Ron’s owl on Etsy at any given time.
