Quiz – Hermione Granger

Author J.K. Rowling originally had Jane as Hermione’s middle name but later changed her mind. Why? Because that was also the middle name of Dolores Umbridge and Rowling didn’t want them to share the same middle name.

Ron had criticized Hermione earlier in the day to Harry and Hermione overheard them. She ran off to a bathroom where she stayed for hours, crying over Ron’s harsh words. Thankfully, Ron and Harry realized that Hermione was no where to be seen when the troll was loose in the school, went searching for her, and saved her from the troll when it was rampaging the bathroom she was in. Defeating the troll together was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between the trio.

Hermione’s parents were both Muggles who both worked as dentists. That is about all we know about her parents.

The students were in the Great Hall enjoying a Halloween feast when Professor Quirrell interrupted the feast with the news that there was a troll loose in the castle.

Hermione was exceptionally skilled at conjuring blue fire that she could carry in a jam jar. She used this skill to set fire to Snape’s robe when she and Ron thought that Snape was jinxing Harry during his first Quidditch game.

Fluffy the three-headed dog was the first of the five levels of protection guarding the stone. Hermione successfully overcame two of the five challenges. First she saved them from the Devil’s Snare by conjuring up magical fire. Then she solved the riddle of the potions, proving that she really was as brainy as she appeared to be. Harry could not have gotten to the stone if not for Hermione’s cleverness. Sadly, the potions riddle was not included in the movie.

We don’t know when Viktor Krum kissed Hermione but my guess is that it happened on or after the Yule Ball. Ron was very jealous when he found out that Viktor kissed Hermione.

Hermione was horrified to learn that house-elves were enslaved for their entire lives unless their families freed them, which pretty much never happened. She dedicated a good amount of time to improving the lives of house-elves and refused to believe that the majority of house-elves were happy with their situations. This storyline was in several of the books but did not make it into the movies.

Hermione created the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, shortened to S.P.E.W. (or “spew” as Ron liked to call it) in an attempt to bring attention to the plight of house-elves. Harry and Ron joined out of a sense of obligation due to their friendship with her. The only other person who joined was Neville Longbottom who joined just to get Hermione to stop pestering him about it. Hermione’s efforts were wasted, though, because the house-elves did not appreciate what she was trying to do and none of the school elves wanted to be freed.

Hermione enchanted her handbag with an Undetectable Extension Charm that allowed her to pack everything she, Harry, and Ron might need when they went off on their own to search for Voldemort, including a small library of books. Author J.K. Rowling has shared that the charm was illegal but that Hermione was never charged because of her important role in defeating Voldemort.
