Author J.K. Rowling introduced children all over the world to a magical treat called chocolate frogs in her first story, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (aka Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the U.S.). We learned about them as Harry Potter did, during his first ride on the Hogwarts Express. Not only do the boxes contain a frog made of chocolate that has one good jump in them (as explained by Ron Weasley), but each box also has a card in it of a famous witch or wizard.
Muggles were finally able to collect their own cards when Universal Studios theme parks around the world and Warner Bros. Studio Tours in London, England, started selling them in 2010. The pictures in the stories all move, sometimes completely out of view, which is normal in the world Harry belonged to.
Unfortunately, the characters in the cards you can collect are not quite that mobile but they are lenticular, so they do move a bit. You can see each character change slightly when you move a card gently from side to side.
All pictures are mine, except for the pictures of the limited edition cards and comparison images. Thank you to Luis Cantos for giving me permission to use his picture. On a side note, it is surprisingly difficult to get a good photo of a lenticular card because of how it changes with movement. I assure you that these cards look much nicer in person than they do here.
What you’ll find here is a list of all chocolate frog cards and where you can find them. I will also show you what the boxes look like, as well as how to spot a new card if you happen to be at a location that sells them.
Be aware that this post is about the cards found inside a chocolate frog box that are movie authentic and look like the one seen above, not the rectangular cards that you can get in stores across the globe that come in plastic wrapping. Those are completely different cards that I am not discussing in this post.

Once upon a time, Beatrix Bloxam was a witch known by young witches and wizards throughout the world because she wrote The Toadstool Tales, which included bowdlerised adaptations of previously published works, including Tales From Beedle The Bard. However, her adaptations were eventually banned because they were known to cause nausea and vomiting in children, which was quite traumatizing. I suspect that Ron Weasley has no idea who she is.

Neville Longbottom could probably tell you who Beaumont Marjoribanks is because Mr. Marjoribanks was a pioneer in the field of Herbology. He was known to collect many rare and magical flowers, and also found uses for what he collected. He is believed to have discovered Gillyweed, a plant that lets a human breath under water for a short period of time after ingesting it, which is what Harry Potter used during the second TriWizard Tournament task.

Harry Potter has Bowman E. Wright to thank for the creation of the Golden Snitch. Prior to the use of this magical creature, Quidditch players chased after a living magical bird called the Golden Snidget. The game became much more humane after Mr. Wright’s invention.

I strongly suspect that Ms. Wenlock was an inspiration for Hermione Granger because this witch was a famous Arithmancer. She was the first person to establish the magical properties of the number seven, which, as we all know, Lord Voldemort tried to take advantage of regarding his intended Horcruxes. Thankfully, his plans went awry, which helped lead to his downfall.

Herpo the Foul is arguably the worst wizard to grace a chocolate frog card. He was a Greek Dark wizard who was a Parselmouth and the first known wizard to breed a Basilisk. He was also the first wizard to split his soul and the creator of the Horcrux. This is a kind way of saying that he murdered someone and hid a part of his soul by doing so. I’m sure that a young Tom Riddle came across the history of Herpo and decided to go beyond what Herpo did by splitting his soul into seven parts. Thankfully, splitting his soul as much as he did weakened him, which helped Harry Potter and others defeat him.

The entire wizarding world owes a great debt to Ignatia Wildsmith. She was the witch who invented Floo Powder, a quick method of traveling from one fireplace to another. However, the Dursleys would certainly not appreciate her, if they ever learn that she is why the Weasleys made such a mess of their home when they attempted to visit via the boarded up fireplace.

I confess that I had not heard of this wizard until his card was released. Clearly I need to brush up on my wizarding history! According to the back of his card, Paracelsus “was a renowned sixteenth-century physician, alchemist and surgeon.” Based on all the documents that surround him in his picture, he appears to have been quite dutiful in documenting what he learned or discovered.

The gold Albus Dumbledore card was issued a year after the four cards of the founding members of Hogwarts. I do not know if it was sold randomly or as a marked box, but it has long since been unavailable. I’ve seen it on eBay a couple of times and it sells for a good amount of money, which doesn’t surprise me given how rare it is.

The silver Albus Dumbledore card was issued the same time as the gold one (to the best of my knowledge) but is the rarest of all the chocolate frog cards because you could only buy it in Japan, at the Universal Studios theme park there.
The second picture does a better job of showing the silver metallic background.
I’ve never seen this particular card listed on eBay, but it’s possible that it might show up someday.

The four Hogwarts founders and Albus Dumbledore chocolate frog cards got a new look for the Harry Potter exhibit in Madrid, Spain. Changes include:
- Each character has a different pose than their other cards
- The background for each character is pink above the buildings
- The box is smaller, uses a different font, and has a new look (I don’t have a picture of the box to know what the changes are)
I said that the Silver Albus Dumbledore card is the rarest of the limited edition but I could be wrong. It’s entirely possible that these five cards are the rarest. I’ve never seen these particular cards listed on eBay, but it’s possible that they might show up someday.

Chocolate Frog Boxes |
Regular Chocolate Frog Box
This is what the chocolate frog boxes look like that each of the cards seen on this page come in. As you can see, they are authentic to the boxes seen in the films. You’ll get both a card and a huge slab of milk chocolate in the shape of a frog. Sadly, these frogs don’t jump like the ones Harry eats, but maybe that’s for the best, as I wouldn’t want to worry about a piece of candy jumping around in my stomach!
Chocolate Frog Box
Newly Released Chocolate Frog Box
Most of the time you will have no idea what card is included with your frog because the cards are random and the boxes do not have any way to know what’s inside. However, there is an exception to this rule when a new card is released. During a very brief period of time, usually just one week, maybe two, you can buy boxes that have gold stickers on them. Boxes with gold stickers indicate that they have the newest cards inside.
This is the easiest way to add the newest card to your collection if you happen to be at a Universal Studios theme park or the Warner Bros. Studio Tour during this small window of time. The Studio Tour also sells them on their website and will ship to other countries, including the U.S. (I’ve done this) and they seem to keep the identified boxes longer than Universal Studios does. You can click here to see if there are any new boxes being sold at the Studio Tour.
Did you know that the cards have changed over time? Not the designs, but other elements. The company that produces chocolate frog cards has found ways to improve them. Earlier cards were darker in color and the pictures were more blurry than the ones made today. Here are a couple of examples to show how they’ve improved:
This means that your collection of cards might vary, depending on when each card was made.
One last thing before I wrap up this article. If you are looking for a specific card and happen to be at one of the Universal Studios theme parks, then you can ask a store employee if they have any cards to trade. If they do then you can swap one of your cards with one of theirs. Most of the cards are really common ones, like the four Hogwarts founders, but it IS possible to get the harder-to-find cards that way. This is how I got my first Dumbledore card.
What is your favorite card? Do you have them all? Which one do you want the most? Let me know in the comments below!

There are a few more chocolate frog cards that have been released that are not in your list. I greatly appreciate your website list….it is wonderful to see all in one place. Please let me know if you are still updating this list? ..and if you would like any pictures of the cards that I have, which are not shown.
Today I am updating the list and apologize for being so behind on them. Hopefully the list will be updated when you come back to check.
Which cards are those please
WONDERFUL article!
Been going to Universal Studios Orlando since March 2021. I recently went for the Orlando Informer Meet-up and bought my first chocolate frog and I got the Merlin card. Looks like I’ll be buying more.
I would like heaps of chocolate frog cards sent to fish at Canberra
Send over or chocolate frogs from Harry Potter to fisher ACT Canberra Australia
I can’t believe they don’t have a Morgana chocolate frog but they do have Merlin. Morgana was the first chocolate frog card Harry ever collected, and was the greatest sorceress of all time. I thought they did have her at one point, but I can’t find any information about finding one now. Might be a little bitter as I was named after her and thought it would be really cool to have her card.
Except the first card he got was Dumbledore in both book and film? 😬 Only in the games do you get a Morgana. But I do hope they eventually expand to some of the other characters like they have with the little Lego ones! 🤷🏻♀️
Same, this disappointed me immensely
You were named after her or you have the same name as her? Plus Harry Potter’s first Chocolate Frog Card was actually Albus Dumbledore.
The gold Dumbledore card was sold in a box with a gold sticker stating limited edition. I purchased 2 of the at Universal in Florida in 2011. I kept 1 of the original boxes (and the chocolate frog), and have the 2 gold cards. I was unaware of how rare they are until I chanced across your site, so thank you.
Are you interested in selling one? Been looking for a gold Dumbledore for awhile now!
Does anyone know who these people are that are portraying these characters on the cards? I find it so odd that its so hard to find info on the internet about chocolate frogs and the cards. Its only one of the most popular items in one of the most popular book series in the world. Would love to see Hengist of Woodcroft or Bertie Botts appear at a comic-con type of convention, but how the heck would anyone know if we don’t even know their real name.
The Noble Collection has a chocolate frog replica. This replica has a different Dumbledore card. It features the first actor to play Dumbledore in the movies. The card is slightly different than the cards from the parks but the size is the same.
Cinereplica’s has a set of 12 different cards available in the chocolate frog mold kits. They are slightly smaller than the cards available in the parks and the characters are the same except for one. They have a “Dumbledore Missing” card.
The front of the card has a black window just like the scene in the movie. The back of the card has the quote from Ron, ” you don’t expect him to hang around all day”. Very Cool.
I still haven’t seen the Daisy Dodderidge card for sale yet 🙁 I wonder if it’s been delayed again, I keep checking the website for the studio tour shop and they’re still saying the last one they released was Parascelus 🙁
I got 3 Daisy cards in my most recent patch of frogs so they’re definitely released now!
This is soo cool! Thank you soo much!
Finally got my hands on a golden dumbledore card, so happy 😃. Now I only need the silver dumbledore to complete the collection. I also found out that the exhibit cards are not only from Madrid, because in the Netherlands there was also an exhibition with the same cards. I can confirm this, because I have those cards. This conclude that there were more countries where the exhibition took place? I also think that the silver dumbledore is the rarest of all the cards.
Hi, really nice list of the cards! <3 Love it and it's sooo helpful!
If this is any help, i'm pretty sure the cards you listed as Madrid exhibition exclusives are not exclusive to the Madrid exhibition but the traveling exhibition. I have the Dumbledore Card and got it at the exhibition in Berlin, Germany a few years ago. (my first) Regarding more differences to the normal cards: not only the box is smaller but of course also the cards, the background of the card is not purple but blue (also the Frog box) and what i find most annoying is that the lenticulars of these cards are not good quality, they have the same outwashed look like the old normal cards. If you want to include a picture of the box they come in i could try make them for you 🙂 Just write me an e-mail.
I got a Severus Snape chocolate frog card. Does anyone know how common that is?
I am unaware of Snape having a chocolate frog card. Where did you buy it?
Hi Rochelle, thanks for creating this artical. This and one other are the only two pieces of genuine complete information I have found onl the Internet! I would love for an official source to really dedicate some online space for them.
Ever since reading the books as a young boy I wished I could one day buy these cards and now we can! I recently went to WB studio Tour in London and bought the tin which comes with the four founders plus Dumbledore and also I got three single frogs. The cards are great and I have become slightly obsessed and I now have 12 out of the 15 regular cards from ebay hunting. I also won’t be collecting the other versions.
I hope they make all the cards mentioned in the books and also more.
Thank you! I confess that I fall behind sometimes in keeping this list updated but I eventually do. I created this list because I couldn’t find anything official, as you mentioned. There have been so many amazing people who have contributed their knowledge to this post, and I am thankful for all the help I’ve gotten.
If things continue as they have in recent years, there will be one or two new cards released each year. That’s good news because there are plenty of characters they can add and plenty of fans who will want them.
Did you know the chocolate frog boxes themselves have changed? I went to the Harry Potter Studio tour on 31st July 2013 and bought my first ever chocolate frog. The box (which I still have) has a dark blue background, whereas subsequent chocolate frogs I have bought (I have 14 of those as I keep them all!) have a dark purple background.
No, I didn’t know that! Interesting. Thank you for the information about the boxes. It’s fun learning things like this. 🙂
Can you tell me if there’s any difference in what cards get put in the Dark chocolate frog boxes vs the Milk chocolate frog boxes? I got two for my nephews and the dark chocolate had a wizard i’d never heard of, but the Milk chocolate had Dumbledore. Is it random across the board, or do I need to get them all Milk chocolate ones so they have wizards they recognize..?
Sarah,
There is no difference. It will be random cards in both dark and milk chocolate frog boxes, unless the boxes are specifically marked with a gold sticker, which indicates that box has a newly released card. I hope this helps.
Rochelle
Have you seen the Paracelsus card? Some ebay sellers are selling that card now and im not sure if that is supposed to be released this year?
Katelyn,
My apologies for not seeing this until now. It’s possible that the card hadn’t yet been released when you posted this, but it is now officially sold.
Rochelle
ugh! both the exhibition cards, and silver dumbles are up for once but sooo expensive. nearly 2k for silver. and 1200 for the madrid.
no thanks.
New card: Daisy Dodderidge. Built the leaky cauldron.
Wow, nice article! I really enjoyed by reading it, with good information for me as starting collector. Can I send you an e-mail with questions? Thanks!
Yannick,
My apologies for not seeing this until now. Yes, feel free to send an email to me with questions.
Rochelle
Hi,
Thank you for this list, very useful.
Could you add Merlin card, too?
Thanks
Thank you for reminding me that I needed to add Merlin. That card is now in the list.
Just got my hands on a silver dumbledore card after 8 years of searching everyday. So happy 😀 they are out there!!
Wow! Congratulations!!! That’s fantastic!
lucky!
Did you have to give your first born child away for it?
But really, how much did you pay for it?
so happy for you!
Thanks for adding the new 2020. You added merlin i see but you forgot daisy. i admit i check this list frequently. To bad there isnt one for the jelly belly ones. Hope you’re staying safe!
Hey, me again, I was using this guide to get the cards, I saw two not listed. One had that gold sticker so Merlin must be new but I also saw a Daisy Dodderidge . May be time for an update? Not sure how old the Daisy one is. But everytime I’ve seen it its gone within minutes and always listed as “rare”
Merlin was released in 2019 and I have added him to the list (sorry for not adding him sooner!). As for Daisy Dodderidge, rumor has it that the Daisy card is scheduled to be released some time in 2020, but some people have gotten their hands on the cards early and sell them for insane prices on eBay. Please don’t buy them before their official release date, as those cards haven’t received final approval for release and were illegally obtained. Plus, you’ll pay a lot less for them after their official release.
This article is very helpful to someone just starting to collect the cards. I recently as a gift for myself got the four founders from the universal Orlando site. Thought that would be a great way to start, but I wanted to know what other cards are out there for me to keep an eye out for. I had a hard time finding a comprehensive (Or updated) list till I stumbled upon this gem, on behalf of beginners (and seasoned) card collectors. Thank you!
I want them all! Well the silver and Madrid Spain ones probably won’t happen (I am so glad you put the ones found only in other parks/limited) but I can dream. I hope they come out with more in the future.
The one I want most though is Bertie Bott, the one that started all the fun (and delicious chocolate.) Though I think my favorite would be
Artemesia Lufkin
I am so glad to know that this article is helpful to you! Like you, I’d love to have them all but the silver, gold, and Madrid cards are way out of my price range. Yes, let’s keep dreaming on those. 🙂
