Are you getting ready to buy a present for a child who loves the Harry Potter stories but don't know what to get? Relax, I'm going to help you out with this list of 12 Harry Potter gifts for kids. There is a seemingly endless amount of Harry Potter merchandise you can choose from but some are better suited for children than others.
Whether you are shopping for Christmas or a birthday, any of the gift ideas seen here will be well received. I can say this because we have most of the items listed here and my two daughters love them, and, more importantly, they have all stood the test of time with my kids.
The items listed here are all kid friendly, but some items have small pieces so please do not give them to children under 3 years of age.
I also created a list of 12 Harry Potter gifts for adults which will help you out if you also have adults you need to buy for.
Action Figure
Children and imaginary play go hand-in-hand so it was only natural that I include action figures on this list of Harry Potter gifts for kids. There are a lot of different action figures to choose from, not just the one seen here, from witches and wizards to magical creatures and animals. The links below will show you a wide variety of action figures based on Harry's magical world.

Harry Potter Clue Board Game
This is another really fun board game based on the world of Harry Potter. It is just like the regular game of Clue that you grew up with but instead of taking place in a home, it is set in Hogwarts. Each room is a classroom, the villains are Death Eaters or Slytherin students (i.e. Draco Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange), and the weapons are magical items (i.e. Mandrake Root or the Vanishing Cabinet). Unlike the traditional game of Clue, no one gets murdered in this one. Instead, a student has gone missing and you have to figure out all the clues to save the student.
We have the original version of this game (seen in the image below) and it has been played many, many times in our house. Even my husband likes this game, which is high praise for the game because he is not big into board games. There is also an updated version that changes the game slightly but the basics are the same for both versions. The main difference is that the original version has a board that lacks color and is meant to resemble the Maurader's Map.
As much as I love the game I admit that it can be difficult figuring out where the rooms are because of the lack of color. One of the changes to the newer version is a lot of color making it easy to find each room, and this one might be easier for younger children to play because of the colors.
Harry Potter Hogwarts LEGO® Game
Did you know that the Lego company made a board game based on Hogwarts? Yep, they sure did, and it is a lot of fun to play for both kids and adults. The game is unique in that you will never play the same game twice, and it takes as much luck as it does skill to win! I know this because we have this game and it is one of our go-to games. It is for 2-4 players, ages 8+, and game play lasts approximately 30 minutes.
LEGO® Harry Potter Video Game
Warner Bros. and LEGO® teamed up to create two Lego video games based on the Harry Potter books. Notice that I said books and not movies. There were a lot of subplots left out of the movies that LEGO® included in their two games. LEGO® games are always fun and these are no exceptions.
There are two games - the first covers the first four books, and the second covers the last three books. The games are available for the Mac, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, PC, PlayStation, and XBox 360.
I speak from experience because we have both games and my girls and I all played them and LOVED them! They are very easy for kids to play and they will love the silly humor that is infused throughout the games. And there is no need to worry about some of the scarier aspects of the stories, such as Dumbledore's death. LEGO® toned it down and made those moments funny.
Pop-Up Book
Pop-up books are able to bring a story to life in a way that the written word can't. These days, pop-up books have become an art form and this holds true with the Harry Potter pop-up books. These books are sure to enchant children both young and old, but be careful when giving them to very young children because the pages can be easily damaged by little hands.
We have the book that you see in the image below and I can attest to how wonderful it is. The pictures are gorgeous and magical!
Poster
Both boys and girls love putting up posters of their favorite characters, and there are plenty of choices from the eight Harry Potter movies. There are posters of the characters, Platform 9 3/4, the Quidditch World Tournament, the Maurader's Map, Dumbledore's Army, Hogsmeade, and plenty of other scenes. There is even a poster of Harry's glasses and Hedwig that was made from the entire text of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone!
Stuffed Animal
There are all kinds of animals in the wizarding world and many of them have been brought into our Muggle world as plush stuffed animals. Both boys and girls love stuffed animals and there are plenty to choose from, including Hedwig (Harry Potter's owl), Fluffy (Hagrid's three-headed-dog), Buckbeak the hippogriff, Pygmy Puffs, Crookshanks (Hermione Granger's cat), Fawkes (Dumbledore's Phoenix), and dragons.
Wall Decal
Wall decals are a super easy way to decorate without having to damage your walls with paint or nails. Most decals can be reused so your children can put them where ever they want, then put the decals somewhere else if they change their minds later.
There are loads of different Harry Potter decals. Many of them are of quotes from the stories, while others are of the characters from the movies. There are even a few that will transform your doors into magical portals to another world, such as Platform 9 3/4 or a Hogwarts corridor!
Wand
Kids love to play with wands and when it comes to the world of Harry Potter there is a wand for all the important characters and many of the lesser characters. My girls both have wands and there have been many magical fights in our home with them. The wands that my daughters have come with a tip that lights up when the wands are flicked or moved around.
