Rubeus Hagrid CostumeI just adore Hagrid. He is the quintessential gentle giant. Hagrid has a heart of gold and is fiercely loyal to those who have seen past his size and accept him for who he is, such as Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter.

You can have fun putting together the odds and ends needed if you want to dress up in a Hagrid costume. There is no official costume for Rubeus Hagrid for adults, though there is one for children, but that’s not a problem because there are a lot of different items that can easily be combined to create your version of Hogwarts Keeper of the Keys.

The most obvious feature needed to look like Hagrid is wild hair and a bushy beard, but it takes more than just hair. Additional key accessories include a coat, a pink umbrella, and even a crossbow. As you will see below, you can play around with accessories while still keeping the feel for Hagrid, which makes him a very fun character to dress as.

From his hair, beard, and coat to his keys, lantern, and pink umbrella, here is everything you need to dress up in a Rubeus Hagrid costume!

Mandatory Accessories

Wig and Beard

Hagrid was described in the books and seen in the movies as someone who resembled a humongous wild man. The very first time Harry met Hagrid he was described this way:

“A giant of a man was standing in the doorway. His face was almost completely hidden by a long, shaggy mane of hair and a wild, tangled beard…”

Unless you have been blessed with wildly unruly, long hair, and have an equally wild and unruly beard, chances are that you will need a beard and wig set. Although there aren’t any sets specifically meant for Hagrid costumes, there are many that will work so well (the best are the caveman wig and beard sets) that you’d never know they were not intended for use as Rubeus Hagrid!

Pink Umbrella

Ah, Hagrid’s beloved pink umbrella. I considered putting this with the Optional Accessories down below but Hagrid’s umbrella is so iconic that I put it here, instead.

Hidden within his pink umbrella was Hagrid’s wand. His wand was broken while he was a young student at Hogwarts after Hagrid was wrongly expelled from Hogwarts after the death of Moaning Myrtle. He kept the wand, had it repaired, and hid it inside the umbrella hoping that no one would know that he had hidden it there.

No Hagrid outfit would be complete without a lovely pink umbrella. The more girly the umbrella, the better!

Moleskin Coat

Hagrid is most often seen wearing a long coat made of moleskin. If you happen to already own a moleskin coat, wear it! If not, then a great alternative is the dusters worn by cowboys. When you click the link below you will see both costume and authentic cowboy dusters.

Have you stopped to wonder how many moles lost their lives in order to make a coat large enough for Hagrid? Well, you have now. But don’t worry! Moleskin coats aren’t really made from moles. It is made from cotton and is said to be very durable. I’m sure this was a good thing considering how dangerous Hagrid’s job was.

Vest

If you really want to look like Hagrid then you will also need a vest, since Hagrid wore one in the movies. Finding a vest can be tricky. You don’t want to go with anything fancy, like the kind of vest worn at a wedding.

There are a lot of different vests that you could choose from. Some are plain vests, while others are fishing vests. Fishing vests include a lot of pockets, which might be a good choice since I’m sure Hagrid would have used them to keep things he needed for work, such as food for Hippogriffs or biscuits for Fang.

Shirt

You will also need a shirt. Brown, of course, since that seems to be Hagrid’s favorite color for clothes.

The best type of shirt will be one that looks rugged and can stand up to being outdoors a lot. It’s okay if the browns you choose don’t specifically go together. It is unlikely that anything will clash since just about every shade of brown goes together.

Belt

You will also want to include a belt with your Hagrid outfit. Hagrid wore his belt on the outside of his shirt, not around his pants. This means you will want your belt to be visible, not hidden away.

As you might guess, Hagrid’s wore a very large belt. After searching through the belts on Amazon I realized that Santa belts are perfect for dressing up as Hagrid!

Pants

Don’t forget to put on your pants! Hagrid’s pants were baggy and very casual looking. After searching through the many styles of pants available for men I found that paratrooper cargo style pants are perfect!

Not only is this style baggy, but they also have additional pockets. As I said above with the vests, I’m sure that Hagrid would appreciate the extra pockets.

Shoes

You can complete your look with a nice pair of boots. But, by nice, I don’t mean fancy because I highly doubt that Hagrid ever owned a fancy pair of shoes. At least, his idea of fancy and ours probably differs quite a bit. If you don’t know what I mean, think back to when Hagrid tried to dress to impress Madame Maxime in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

I have found shoes and boots that would work for your costume. The shoes you will see are all rugged, some more than others. Some are even waterproof, which is something I’m sure Hagrid would have appreciated given how much he worked outdoors.

Optional Accessories

Keys

Do you remember what Hagrid’s official title at Hogwarts was when he first met Harry? It was “Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts”. Therefore, it would be completely fitting for you to add a set of keys to your look.

Don’t go with just any keys. Look for ones that are large and easily visible if you attach them somewhere, such as to your belt. The best type of keys that I found are jailer keys on a large ring.

Goggles

The very first time we saw Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone he delivered baby Harry safely to Dumbledore in front of the Dursley family home. Hagrid arrived there via a flying motorcycle that he borrowed from Sirius Black. As is fitting someone who rides a motorcycle, Hagrid wore goggles to protect his eyes during the flight.

I don’t know why but Goggles are one of my favorite accessories for a Hagrid outfit. You have a couple of options. You can go with traditional aviator goggles, or you can choose goggles that have a steampunk vibe to them.

Lantern

Hagrid didn’t end his duties as the groundskeeper of Hogwarts when the sun went down. He worked all hours of the day and night. When he worked at night it was common to see Hagrid carrying a lantern with him.

When you click the image below you will be taken to a wonderful selection of vintage railroad lanterns. Most of them are powered by batteries, but not all. Double-check on the lantern you like to make sure that it uses batteries and not oil or kerosine.

Shoulder-Sitting Dragon

What is the one creature that Hagrid had always wanted? A dragon! Boy, was he thrilled when he finally got one, even if he wasn’t able to keep Norbert for very long. You can show Hagrid’s love of dragons by adding this shoulder-sitting dragon to your Hagrid costume.

Mask

There is one last accessory that you can add to your costume. Instead of wearing a wig and beard, you could put on a Hagrid mask.

There are two styles of Hagrid masks that are made of latex, and both are difficult to find. Interestingly, although there are two different masks, they both depict Hagrid in the same condition – how he looked when he was being beaten up by his “little” brother, Grawp. The faces of both masks have wounds on them. It is the style of each face and hair that is different.

Belly Padding

Hagrid is a large man in every way. Not only is he tall, thanks to his giant DNA, but he’s also round. It’s okay if you don’t have the natural padding that Hagrid does because you can wear belly padding to look larger than you really are.

There are belly paddings available that are intended for Santa costumes but will be perfect for a Hagrid costume.
