Myrtle Warren was a student who attended Hogwarts 50 years before Harry Potter arrived there. Myrtle was a nosey student who preferred to spread gossip to doing her homework.
Myrtle attended Hogwarts while Tom Riddle was there, and was killed by the basilisk that Tom set free from the Chamber of Secrets. Myrtle made the decision to become a ghost so she could haunt Olive Hornby, a student who had teased her, and she was apparently successful in her efforts.
It didn’t take long before Myrtle was forced to stay away from Olive, so Myrtle returned to the bathroom stall at Hogwarts where she had died. In life, Myrtle had been a gloomy person, and she continued to be mopey in death. Hogwarts students gave her the nickname of Moaning Myrtle because she was often heard moaning in misery in the girl’s bathroom.
A Moaning Myrtle costume is pretty easy to put together. In fact, this is one of the easiest costumes I’ve worked on. But that doesn’t mean you can’t add your own personal touches to make your version of Myrtle unique. From her hair, glasses, and robe to her toilet seat and Ravenclaw accessories, here are all the items needed to create a Moaning Myrtle costume!
Mandatory Accessories |
Wig
Myrtle had long brown hair with bangs, and she wore her hair in two ponytails. If you already have long hair then all you need to do is put it in ponytails and you are good to go. If not, then a wig will make this an easy thing to do. If you buy a wig then you will probably need to add the ponytails, but that is simple enough.

Glasses
Moaning Myrtle was one of many characters who wore glasses. Her glasses were round, just like Harry’s.

Official Costume
There is an officially licensed costume for Moaning Myrtle that includes a Ravenclaw robe, wig, and glasses. Just as an FYI, the robe is thin and probably won’t last very long, and it’s getting harder to find as time goes by.

Robe
As I said above, the official costume for Moaning Myrtle is getting difficult to find. The good news is that it is easy to create your own costume using Ravenclaw house robes and accessories.
Ravenclaw Robe
Cosplay Robe
In addition to mass-produced robes, there are also Cosplay Ravenclaw robes. Cosplay robes are made of higher quality materials, will stand up to repeat wearings, are more detailed, and look gorgeous.
If you want a robe that is made from a nicer material and is lined with the colors of Ravenclaw House then you will want a Cosplay robe. Cosplay robes are not always available so it is possible that when you click on the links below that there won’t be any currently for sale. With any luck, though, there will be!

White Shirt
Most Hogwarts students wore a sweater over their white shirts but it looks like Myrtle must not have been wearing hers on the day that she died. All we see under her robe is a white shirt.
White School Shirt
Grey Skirt
I’m pretty sure that Myrtle was also wearing the Hogwarts skirt with her shirt, even if I don’t recall seeing it, so a grey skirt is a safe bet.

Grey Tights
Grey tights are the perfect compliment to a skirt. Plus, having grey skirts is appropriate color for a ghost to wear.

Tie
The tie seen worn by Shirley Henderson, the actress who portrayed Myrtle in the films, was green but we know that Myrtle was a Ravenclaw so this is confusing. I recommend going with a Ravenclaw tie unless you want to be screen accurate.
Ravenclaw Necktie
Scarf
It might get cold in the U-bend of Myrtle’s toilet so feel free to include a Ravenclaw scarf with your costume. This is a nice addition to any of you who are dressing up in colder climates and need a bit of warmth.

Grey Cloak
Myrtle was a very depressed ghost. In fact, she was gleeful in her sadness. You could wear a grey robe instead of a black Ravenclaw robe to accentuate Myrtle’s glumness.

Toilet Seat
Moaning Myrtle haunted a girl’s bathroom and her favorite place to be was the toilet where she died. Add a touch of whimsy to your costume by placing a toilet seat around your neck. The links below will show you soft, padded toilet seats since I think those would be much more comfortable to wear than hard, heavy ones.

“You’re Welcome To Share My Toilet”
Myrtle flirted with Harry Potter and told him that if he died, he would be welcome to share her toilet with him. If you choose to wear a toilet seat, write, “You’re welcome to share my toilet with me,” on a piece of paper and tape inside the lid.
Ravenclaw Pin
Add a Ravenclaw House pin to your uniform. There are at least a handful of official pins that I know of, but there are many fan-made pins that are also available.

White Face Paint
As a ghost, Myrtle had a pale complexion. You can replicate Myrtle’s ghostly appearance by applying a light coat of white face paint to your face. If you want, you can also add a bit of black or grey paint to make yourself look gaunt.

Tom Riddle’s Diary
Ginny Weasley had Tom Riddle’s diary during her first year at Hogwarts. The diary was a Horcrux and Tom’s essence began to possess poor Ginny and caused her to do bad things while under his influence. She finally realized what was happening and rid herself of the diary by throwing it into Myrtle’s toilet, hitting Myrtle, and angering the ghost.
