Wizarding Cookbook: Year One

Front and back cover of the green version of this cookbook.

How would you like to enroll in a class that will teach you how to make magical food? Me, too! Sadly, Hogwarts doesn't appear to have such a class but a group of Muggles known as ForeverMagic has faced this problem head on and found a way around it - they collecting recipes and created their own class book.

I have a confession to make. I have a deep love of cookbooks, but I hate to cook. Sounds strange, I know, and it drives my husband nuts, but I truly enjoy reading them (just not using them as they are intended). What I love even more is buying cookbooks based on the magical world of Harry Potter, and I own several. So, it took me about 30 seconds of deliberating before I decided to buy it. How am I kidding? I knew I was going to get it from the moment I saw it!

FYI, you only have until September 21, 2019 to choose one of the available book options. I don't know if they will sell it anywhere else after that so don't wait to get one.

Wizarding Cookbook: Year One

Update: This is no longer sold on Kickstarter and it appears that this will be the only one because the company seems to have disappeared.

As of right now (August 13, 2019), this book is only available on Kickstarter. The creators had hoped to have this project funded within a month of creating it but it took just mere days for that to happen. It looks like I'm not the only one who has a love of these kind of books...

There are three versions of the book that you can buy (assuming they don't sell out):

  • Paperback
  • Hard cover
  • Premium hard cover

The recipes are the same regardless of which option you choose and all are made to look like well used school books. In fact, the book is inspired greatly by the Half-Blood Prince. According to the description, there are instructions that have been crossed out and handwritten notes added (you are supposed to follow the handwritten instructions). The paper for all three resembles parchment, as you can see from the image above. This looks like a true labor of love.

Both versions of the premium edition, one with black and silver, the other with green and gold.

The premium edition comes in two colors: green with gold foil accent or black with silver foil accent (the Dark Lord edition). The covers for both colors will be fabric and will be made to look battered. What's not to love about that? All versions are printed in color, something I sincerely appreciate as I hate looking at prepared food that is in black and white.

There was also a signed edition, which was limited to 15 but sold out almost immediately. Sorry you missed it.

The company has several stretch goals, which means that if they hit certain financial milestones that free gifts will be included to everyone who bought a book. The first two stretch goals have already been met and I'm sure the others will be, too, before the project ends on September 21, 2019. This adorable Hedwig pin is one of the goals that has already been met:

Hedwig pin, which will be given away free to everyone who buys this cookbook.

You might have wondered by now if this is the only book that will be published or if there are more to come, to represent advancement through the wizarding cooking class. Turns out there are to be more, six more to be exact. ForeverMagic intends to release a total of seven books with magical recipes, one for each year students are at Hogwarts. Fortunately it should take just three years for them to be released to the Muggle world, not seven!

I, for one, cannot wait to see them all sitting in my kitchen. Who knows, maybe I'll even be inspired to make a recipe or two...
