Why I Love Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

If you know me in person or have interacted with me on Facebook then you already know that I have been unabashed in my hatred of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child. I even made a video review about it, which you can watch here:

Did you watch the video? If so, you understand why I have hated the story. No doubt it’s amazing to watch as a play, but as a book? My opinion has been that it is terrible.

Today while vacuuming I started thinking about the Cursed Child and decided that there must be something to love about it, some redeeming quality. I’m happy to say that I’ve succeeded in finding something!

Right about now you might be beginning to suspect that I’ve been Imperiused, that I’m not of sound mind (Heather, I’m looking at you!). Please hear me out and maybe you’ll even agree with me by the end of this article.

So, what is it about the Cursed Child story that I now love? Well, to be honest, nothing. At least, not about the story itself. I stand by my original opinion that it’s rubbish. However, I do love one thing about it, and that is that it reminded me realize just how brilliant J.K. Rowling’s series is.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why Rowling gave a green light to this and let them include her name on it, even though she didn’t write it. None of it. Perhaps not even Rowling understands how brilliant her story is, that she didn’t realize that the Cursed Child story is not even close to hers when it comes to its ability to tell a tale. As Buddy said in the movie Elf (and I’m talking to the Cursed Child story when I say this), “You sit on a throne of lies!”

To me, nothing in the story is true to the source material, other than names. Character personalities changed, storylines changed, even the gosh darned freaking Trolly Witch changed! Really? All of a sudden she has more in common with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator than a real witch? I don’t think so. I’m not even positive which of three potential candidates is the one true Cursed Child!

But the series written by Rowling had heart, warmth, and depth. There are so many layers that I get something new from it each time I read it, and I’ve probably read it eight or nine times so far, and am more than half way through The Half-Blood Prince at the moment. I’ve never read a series like it, as a child or adult. Many of us know that she spent years (Years!) creating her world and made sure that everything worked for all seven books before she wrote a single word of the first one. Her dedication to her creation is evident to readers (and movie watchers) of all ages.

So, while my opinion of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child hasn’t changed and will never consider it canon in the Harry Potter universe, I have come to love that it helped remind me of how wonderful J.K. Rowling’s magical world truly is. What about you? Do you agree? Disagree? Have another opinion? Tell me in the comments below.
