Moaning Myrtle Costume

Moaning Myrtle Costume

Myrtle Warren was a student who attended Hogwarts 50 years before Harry Potter arrived there. Myrtle was a nosey student who preferred to spread gossip to doing her homework.

Myrtle attended Hogwarts while Tom Riddle was there, and was killed by the basilisk that Tom set free from the Chamber of Secrets. Myrtle made the decision to become a ghost so she could haunt Olive Hornby, a student who had teased her, and she was apparently successful in her efforts.

It didn't take long before Myrtle was forced to stay away from Olive, so Myrtle returned to the bathroom stall at Hogwarts where she had died. In life, Myrtle had been a gloomy person, and she continued to be mopey in death. Hogwarts students gave her the nickname of Moaning Myrtle because she was often heard moaning in misery in the girls bathroom.

A Moaning Myrtle costume is pretty easy to put together. In fact, this is one of the easiest costumes I've worked on. But that doesn't mean you can't add your own personal touches to make your version of Myrtle unique. From her hair, glasses, and robe to her toilet seat and Ravenclaw accessories, here are all the items needed to create a Moaning Myrtle costume!

There are two types of product links on this page:

  • Picture Link - If you can click on a picture it will take you directly to that item on a site like Amazon or Etsy. It is possible that the item is no longer available for sale from the seller I have linked the picture to, which is why I created the second type of link.
  • Site Link - When you click on a link to an online store, such as Amazon, eBay, or Etsy, it will take you to that site so you can compare prices for the item seen in the picture. Or, if you are looking at a costume then you might see items similar to the one seen in the picture so you choose the one you like best.

Mandatory Accessories

Wig

Myrtle had long brown hair with bangs, and she wore her hair in two ponytails. If you already have long hair then all you need to do is put it in ponytails and you are good to go. If not, then a wig will make this an easy thing to do. If you buy a wig then you will probably need to add the ponytails, but that is simple enough.

Glasses

Moaning Myrtle was one of many characters who wore glasses. Her glasses were round, just like Harry's.

Wand

We never saw Myrtle with a wand, probably because she was a ghost and had no need of one, and we have no idea what her wand looked like or was made of. Therefore, you can choose any wand you want to include with your Moaning Myrtle costume.

School Uniform

Official Costume

There is an officially licensed costume for Moaning Myrtle that includes a Ravenclaw robe, wig, and glasses. Just as an FYI, the robe is thin and not meant to last.

Robe

Ravenclaw House robes are black with the Ravenclaw crest on it (the crest has a raven, the house's mascot). The robe is adorned with dark blue accents.

The robe that comes with the official costume is thin and the quality isn't all that great. You can choose a robe of better quality if you want your robe to stand up to being worn more than once or twice. There are only a few officially authorized Ravenclaw robes and they are fairly basic – most are simple black robes with a crest but no lining.

Cosplay Robe

In addition to mass produced robes there are also Cosplay Ravenclaw robes. Cosplay robes are made of higher quality materials, will stand up to repeat wearings, are more detailed, and look gorgeous.

If you want a robe that is made from a nicer material and is lined with the colors of Ravenclaw House then you will want a Cosplay robe.
Cosplay robes are not always available so it is possible that when you click on the links below that there won’t be any currently for sale. With any luck, though, there will be!

Grey Sweater

Each Hogwarts school uniform includes a sweater, which I am sure the students appreciated on cold, snowy days. The Ravenclaw sweater is dark grey with blue accents around the wrists and bottom of the sweater.

There was an officially licensed Ravenclaw House student sweater, as well as an authentic Replica version, but both can be hard to find. There are also handmade sweaters sold on Etsy, as well as a couple of variations (i.e. sleeveless and button-down). I have included several sources to help you find a sweater if you want to include one with your costume.

White Shirt

Part of every Hogwarts student's school uniform is a white shirt. Sure, you rarely see the shirts underneath the school robes but they are there. Myrtle wore a white shirt as part of her outfit.

One thing that I do not know is if the shirts have long or short sleeves so you can decide what type of shirt will work best for your costume.
There are a lot of shirts to choose from so go with the one that  you like the most.

Grey Skirt

In addition to a white shirt, girls at Hogwarts are also required to wear a skirt, and I'm sure Moaning Myrtle wore one, too. The Ravenclaw skirt seen in the movies is dark grey, so I have chosen styles that match the skirts as closely as possible.

A skirt is a must for any one who wants an authentic Luna Hogwarts student costume. Of course, the skirts Luna would choose if she was allowed to are probably a bit more, um, flavorful than grey but even Luna had to follow Hogwarts requirements.

Grey Tights

Okay, I admit that tights were probably not a requirement for girls at Hogwarts but they look great with the white shirt and grey skirt. Therefore, I am including them for Moaning Myrtle's costume.

There are a lot of different tights you can choose from in a variety of grey colors. Choose whatever shade that you like the most, or that best matches the skirt you decide to wear.

Tie

The last requirement for a Hogwarts uniform is the tie. There are a lot of different Ravenclaw ties but they all have one thing in common - they are blue with grey accents. Some might have a Ravenclaw crest on it (a raven) but not all.

If you are going to also get a scarf and/or hat then I suggest you make sure that the blue for all items match because it would be easy to clash if you get the wrong shades of blue.

Tie Clip

There are several different tie clips, also called tie bars, that you can use to keep your House tie in place. Designs include the Hogwarts school crest, Platform 9 3/4, and the Deathly Hallows symbol.

School Hat

There are two types of hats that students of Hogwarts can wear as they go about their days. The first type of hat is the one you see here, a black hat that comes to a point on top.

This is the hat that conforms with each student’s required uniform. However, based on what we saw in the movies, the hat is required to have but not necessarily to wear. Students seemed to have the option to choose whether or not they wanted to wear it. I don't know if Myrtle wore this style of hat but whether she does or doesn't is up to you.

Beanie

The other style of hat that Hogwarts students can wear is the beanie hat. This hat is perfect during the winter months because it will keep your ears warm if you choose to pull the hat down to cover your ears.

The beanie is knitted from the colors of Gryffindor House. Some styles even include the house’s crest on it, just above the forehead.
It’s nice to know that Hogwarts allows students the option to choose their hats, especially given how cold it gets in the winter time there.

Hair Accessory

Don't want to wear a hat? Then take a look at the many different Ravenclaw hair accessories that are available. There is an officially licensed headband, seen below, and plenty of custom made clips, barrettes, and ponytail holders. The items you will see from the links below might vary quite a bit, but the one thing they all have in common is that they use Ravenclaw's blue and grey.

Scarf

Those of you who live in cool or cold climates will benefit from adding a Ravenclaw house scarf to your costumes. As with the tie, the scarf is comprised of house colors of blue and grey.

The size of the stripes may vary from scarf to scarf but all officially licensed scarves also include a Ravenclaw house crest. There are even handmade scarves on Etsy that are wonderfully interesting and unique. Have fun choosing a scarf!

Socks

There are several different types of Ravenclaw socks, including knee high and ankle socks. Some socks are officially licensed, while many others are lovingly designed by fans.

Shoes

Complete your Ravenclaw House uniform with a pair of shoes. Although there aren't officially licensed shoes, there are several that any Ravenclaw would be proud to wear. There are styles available for both men and women. Personally, I think these would be a really fun addition to a Moaning Myrtle outfit!

Optional Accessories

Grey Robe

Myrtle was a very depressed ghost. In fact, she was gleeful in her sadness. You could wear a grey robe instead of a black Ravenclaw robe to accentuate Myrtle's glumness.

Toilet Seat

Moaning Myrtle haunted a girls bathroom and her favorite place to be was the toilet where she died. Add a touch of whimsy to your costume by placing a toilet seat around your neck. The links below will show you soft, padded toilet seats since I think those would be much more comfortable to wear than hard, heavy ones.

"You're Welcome To Share My Toilet"

Myrtle flirted with Harry Potter and told him that if he died, he would be welcome to share her toilet with him. If you choose to wear a toilet seat, write, "You're welcome to share my toilet with me," on a piece of paper and tape inside the lid.

Ravenclaw Pin

Add a Ravenclaw House pin to your uniform. There are at least a handful of official pins that I know of, but there are many fan made pins that are also available.

Hogwarts Student ID Badge

I found a seller who makes Hogwarts student ID badges. Each badge includes a student's details, such as House, name, gender, wizarding blood status, and wand type. There isn't a badge for Myrtle but you can have one custom made by proving the seller with an image (of yourself or Shirley Henderson, the actress who played Myrtle).

White Face Paint

As a ghost, Myrtle had a pale complexion. You can replicate Myrtle's ghostly appearance by applying a light coat of white face paint to your face. If you want, you can also add a bit of black or grey paint to make yourself look gaunt.

Tom Riddle's Diary

Ginny Weasley had Tom Riddle's diary during her first year at Hogwarts. The diary was a Horcrux and Tom's essence began to possess poor Ginny and caused her to do bad things while under his influence. She finally realized what was happening and rid herself of the diary by throwing it into Myrtle's toilet, hitting Myrtle and angering the ghost.
