Temperament and Personality

Luna is one of my absolute favorite characters from Harry Potter because, although she is aware of what people think of her, she does not care. It is this quality that makes her a wonderful role model for boys and girls of just about any age.

Luna’s temperament is patient, kind, and understanding. She seems almost impervious to stress, even when faced with extreme danger, such as when she helped battle the Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Where Harry Potter is impulsive and rash, Luna is calm and thinks things through before taking action.

I’ve already mentioned that Luna is kind and understanding, but I want to give an example of this. After Sirius Black died, Harry was inconsolable. He wanted desperately to find Sirius again and made several efforts to locate Sirius, even going as far as to seek out Gryffindor’s ghost, Nearly Headless Nick, to find out if Sirius had become a ghost. Nick disappointed him by telling Harry that Sirius wouldn’t have stayed behind as a ghost.

Nothing anyone did or said made Harry feel comforted or better. He didn’t even want to be around his closest friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. It was Luna who made the difference for Harry. She spoke to Harry about witnessing her mother’s death, and how she knows that death is not the end. Harry was unsure about this, but she reminded him that they had both heard whispering voices coming from the Veil that Sirius fell into. Harry felt better after talking to Luna.

Another aspect of Luna’s personality is her faithfulness to her friends. She may not have many friends, but those she has she is fiercely loyal to. She was right there, ready to help or fight, any time her friends needed her. For all that she did, Luna never expected anything in return.

One of my very favorite moments in the books came from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and shows exactly what friendship means to Luna. Harry, Ron, and Hermione went to Luna’s house, hoping to learn about the Deathly Hallows from Luna’s father. While there, Harry ventured into Luna’s room and saw the beautiful artwork she had done on the ceiling of her friends. I couldn’t wait to see this scene in the movie, then was deeply disappointed to find out that it wasn’t included.

 Friends Friends Friends by Luna Lovegood

One of the most unique aspects of Luna is that she believes in the unbelievable. This often resulted in ridicule from other students, though Luna dismissed the ridicule. The basis for her unusual beliefs may stem from the fact that Luna’s father was the owner and editor of “The Quibbler”, a publication that wasn’t always grounded in facts. Things that Luna believes include something called Loser’s Lurgy, Blibbering Humdingers, Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, Dabberblimps, and Nargles.

Length = Unknown
Wood = Unknown
Core = Unknown
Pliancy = Unknown
Maker = Garrick Ollivander
Master = Luna Lovegood
Owner = Luna Lovegood
Additional Details = Luna was owner of two wands. The first wand was taken by Snatchers when she was captured in her sixth year. She was imprisoned in the Malfoy Manor with wand maker Mr. Ollivander, who became quite fond of Luna. He returned her kindness to him during their imprisonment by making a new wand for her. However, the details of neither of Luna’s wands were revealed so we can only guess as to what woods they were made from or what their cores were. I like to think that one or both of Luna’s wand had the heartstring of a griffin, which complimented her bravery.

Things You Didn't Know About Luna Lovegood

What Happened to Luna Lovegood After the Fall of Voldemort?

Luna finished her education at Hogwarts after Voldemort’s demise. She then began searching the world to study strange and new species of creatures. Over time she became a famous naturalist.

At some point she met another naturalist by the name of Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander who was a Magizoologist and author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The two married, though their union occurred much later in their lives than the marriages of her Hogwarts friends. They are now busy raising their twin sons.

What Evanna Lynch Has To Say About Luna Lovegood

Actress Evanna Lynch was a fan of the Harry Potter stories long before she joined the movie cast as Luna. She began reading the books when she was eight years old, and was a self declared “super-fan”. Evanna prepared for her audition by studying the character of Luna much like one would study for a school exam. Clearly Evanna’s studies paid off because she was the perfect Luna! I can’t imagine any other actress portraying the ever-optimistic Luna Lovegood.

Evanna commented on Luna’s personality and how Luna doesn’t change. She said that Luna was relaxed no matter what she was faced with, though Evanna admits that Luna was a bit more serious during the final “Deathly Hallows” movie. She acknowledges that Luna doesn’t believe that death is the end, and that this knowledge brought a sense of spirituality to her.

One of the best things I’ve read that Evanna had to say about Luna was what author J.K. Rowling shared with her. According to Evanna, Rowling said that of all the characters in the Harry Potter series, Luna is the one who is most well adjusted to the concept of death. It is because of this that Luna is so calm in the face of death – she doesn’t fear it.

How Luna Changed Throughout The Series

Luna wasn’t introduced until the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, so we only get to see her for three of the seven books. And, she’s only in the final book briefly, towards the end. Unlike the main characters, we don’t get to see much of Luna, so it is a bit difficult to gauge how she changed. We don’t know what she was like prior to meeting Harry, but I can take a guess.

What we do know is that Ginny Weasley befriended Luna. We also know that Luna was deeply loyal to her friends from Dumbledore’s Army – Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Neville Longbottom. The reason we know this is because she painted the ceiling to her room with their faces and interwove the word friends between them. We also know that the students at Hogwarts had a nasty habit of stealing and hiding Luna’s belongings (i.e. shoes). Therefore, I am going to conclude that she didn’t have any friends prior to meeting Ginny.

Given this information, I suspect that the biggest change for Luna in the books was finding out what friendship is like, and the joy and strength that friends offer. She certainly brought strength to those around her. Luna was just as important during the battle at The Department of Mysteries as the five other students were.

Perhaps more importantly, she had the unusual ability to bring comfort to her friends when they most needed it. This is a rare quality, and I can’t help but wonder if Luna had this ability all along, or if having friends brought it out in her.

How Luna Lovegood Differs in the Books and Movies

To be honest, I’m struggling to find any differences. I think that Evanna Lynch was incredibly true to the written version of Luna in the movies, possibly more true than any other actor or actress.

The main difference has to do with how the film makers chose to introduce Harry to Thestrals, magical beasts that are invisible to all except those who have seen death. In the book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix it was Hagrid who taught Harry about Thestrals. In the movie, however, it was Luna. My guess is that the film makers decided not to have Hagrid teach his class because it might have been too complicated a scene. They instead opted to have a quiet moment with Harry, Luna, and the Thestrals. It was a beautiful moment in the movie, and I think it was a good decision.

    Luna is my favorite character in a lot of ways. She shows that you do not have to be aggressive to be strong.
