Harry Potter’s Wand

Harry Potter's Wand

There are a surprising number of versions of Harry Potter's wand, everything from a traditional wand or interactive wand to one that lights up on the tip or can be used as a remote control! You will have no problem choosing a wand from the list of wands below.

The very first wand we saw in the very first story was Harry Potter's. We didn't just see Harry's wand, we were with him as Harry's wand chose him. What an amazing moment that was! (And, it is one that you can relive if you ever get the chance to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios.)

Harry was accomplished with his wand, but he was able to do extraordinary magic whenever he was up against Voldemort. This became obvious to both Harry and Albus Dumbledore at the end Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts. That was when Harry learned the truth about his wand, that his and Voldemort's wands both had tail feathers from Fawkes the phoenix, and that this meant that neither wand was able to deal fatal blows to the other.

In the final book Mr. Ollivander told Harry that his wand absorbed some of Voldemort's magical skills. This meant that Harry was able to do magic he never knew he was capable of, but only when he fought Voldemort. Sadly, this bit of knowledge was left out of the movies.

Harry Potter's Wand

Wand Wood

Harry's wand was made from the wood of a holly tree. Author J.K. Rowling purposely chose holly because it is thought of as protective. Do you know of a certain boy wizard who was in need of protection???

According to wand lore, holly wands often choose owners who are (or will be) on quests that are dangerous, even spiritual. Harry's quest certainly qualifies as both dangerous and spiritual.

Wand Core

The core of Harry's wand was a feather from the tail of a phoenix. Not just any phoenix, but from Fawkes, Dumbledore's pet.

The core is interesting for a couple of reasons. First, holly wands almost never have a phoenix feather core because this combination is known to conflict with one another. When pairing the two is successful, however, the witch or wizard who wields the wand is seen as unstoppable.

The second reason this is interesting has to do with Lord Voldemort. His wand also had a tail feather from Fawkes, the only two feathers Fawkes gave for use as wand cores, making their wands brothers.

Harry didn't pay much attention at first to the connection between his wand and Voldemort's, but that changed as the story progressed. The fact that they were brother wands affected the magic of both wizards when they fought each other. Unbeknownst to Voldemort, Harry's wand absorbed some of Voldemort's magic, magic that Harry was able to use only against Voldemort.

This connection between the wands ended up saving Harry's life. During Harry's escape with Rubeus Hagrid from Privet Drive in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry's was about to be attacked by Voldemort. Harry's wand recognized Voldemort, even though Voldemort was using Lucius Malfoy's wand and not his, and Harry's wand attacked Voldemort on its own. His wand's attack destroyed Lucius's wand, effectively saving Harry.

Wand Design

Harry's wand looks like a wooden stick that still has the stick's tree bark on the handle area. The bark is very gnarled and knobby.

Ollivanders Wand

This is the wand that you will see for sale if you are fortunate enough to go to Universal Studio's Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It comes in one of Mr. Ollivander's boxes that is lined with a soft material to keep your wand safe for years to come.

Some versions of Ollivander's Harry Potter wand come with a fancy sheer ribbon (the one seen below for the Noble Collection wand), so if you visit one of the websites I've linked to below and don't see this picture but do of one with a ribbon, please know that it's the same wand.

Interactive Ollivanders Wand

Interactive wands are Ollivander wands, but unlike traditional Ollivander wands, these can be used to cast magical spells at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios. There is an interactive version of Harry Potter's wand that looks identical to the one seen above, except at the tip. I wrote about interactive Harry Potter wands if you are unfamiliar with them. You can read about them here.

I
t is very possible that if you want an Ollivander's wand that most of what you find for sale on Amazon and eBay are the interactive version. I doubt anyone will notice the difference if you choose an interactive wand instead of a traditional one - just be sure to use care because the tip can break if you aren't careful.

Here is a video that I took of my daughter as she used her interactive wand to cast a spell. FYI - This is one of the hidden spell locations...

Some browsers prevent videos from playing so if you are unable to watch the video then I recommend that you try again using a different browser (i.e. Google Chrome or Opera)

Noble Collection Wand

The Noble Collection version of Harry's wand includes a different box than the Ollivanders box, as well as a name tag. Noble Collection boxes are lined with a soft material to help protect your wand.

There is also a Noble Collection wand that does not come with the nameplate. That version is the one you see below with the sheer ribbon. The box is also different and does not include the name in silver, seen in the upper image.

Illuminating Tip Wand

One of the earlier versions of Harry's wand has a tip that lights up. There is an on/off button, and it runs on AAA batteries that can be replaced.

After you turn it on you can flick the wand and it will light up. Flick it again and it will diminish in brightness. Flick it a third time and the light will go out. My daughter has this wand and has a lot of fun using it to cast the Lumos spell!

Keychain Wand

Consider a keychain wand if you want to have a wand small enough to take with you where ever you go. All of the keychain wands that I've found are made of metal so they will be durable enough to withstand the abuse that keychains are so often put through.

Pen Wand

Pen wands are a fun twist on the traditional wand. You can use this wand as a writing utensil while also casting spells with it!

Remote Control Wand

Creating a remote control shaped like a wand is, in my opinion, sheer genius! With a simple flick of your wrist you can magically control your television or other devices. And, yes, it can be used on multiple devices, not just your TV. The remote control wand is capable of being programmed for up to nine different functions, which can be changed at any time.

If you are a fan of the TV show Big Bang Theory then you might have seen a wand remote control on one of their episodes. It was this wand, for those who may be wondering. Here is a video of Raj using the wand.

Rubie's Toy Wand

I would argue that most of the wands on this page are meant for adults, and at least one is a collectible item. So, that might make you wonder, where does that leave children who want to pretend to be Harry?

Fortunately, Rubie's made two Harry wands that are meant specifically for children and are meant to be played with. One is just a wand and the other has a light at the tip that is different than the illuminating wand seen above. The wands seen below are made of durable plastic and will stand up to years of spell casting.

Don't Be Like Raj...

As you can see, you have a ton of options when choosing a Harry Potter wand. Whether you buy from Amazon or eBay you'll know exactly what you are going to get. Unless, of course, you don't pay attention to what you order, like Raj in an episode of Big Bang Theory. Take a look in the video below.
